Swiffer Duster (100% Paper)
Swiffer Duster’s familiar plastic clamshell had served its purpose, but with P&G’s commitment to reducing plastic waste, it was time for a better solution. The solution was something that could ship flat, fold efficiently, and run at high speed on existing equipment. Dozens of prototypes were explored to dial in material strength, structure, and manufacturability. The final design cut plastic entirely, reduced overall material usage, and aligned with P&G’s long-term sustainability goals without sacrificing production efficiency.
A Delightful Experience
While sustainability was the driver, user experience remained central. The new packaging needed to be intuitive from shelf to storage, even without the transparency that once showed off the product. Focusing on details like tactile opening gestures, clear graphics, and how the duster was presented once opened resulted in packaging that feels thoughtful, simple, and still unmistakably Swiffer.
Febreze Plug Refill Packaging (100% Paper)
Plastic clamshells have long helped prevent retail theft by securing products inside their packaging. However, with growing consumer demand for sustainability, P&G wanted to redesign the Febreze Plug refill packaging to be 100% recyclable without losing structural integrity. The challenge was to eliminate plastic while still protecting the product during shipping and on shelves.
Design for Production
The new packaging needed to fit seamlessly into existing production line with minimal changes to manufacturing fixtures and tooling. This approach ensured a smooth transition to sustainable packaging with little disruption to cost or efficiency.
The new package reduced plastic waste by over 1million tons per year.
